A bandit aided by a woman robbed the Thomas A. Cook & Son tourist agency of $900, wounded the cashier, and killed a policeman before escaping. The crime occurred on a crowded downtown street during rush hour, described as one of the city’s boldest robberies in years.
A woman who ordered a taxicab at the Great Northern Hotel directed the driver to the Cook offices where she waited while a robber looted a bank. Police say she fled with the crowd while the bandit shot two officers, one fatally injuring the other, before escaping. McCabe, cleared by police, returned to work.
Dillon argues civil service rules protect not jobless officials but continuing public service. The mayor Curley and Public Works Commissioner Murphy discharged 17 workers and abolished their offices. Lawyers will test status under civil service laws as a lengthy meeting with city leaders occurred yesterday.

Inspectors Ransburg Morrissey Devine and Wueschner of New York returned to New York on the 12 2 oclock train this morning with the four alleged gunmen arrested yesterday in the South End. The men named are Benjamin alias Whitey Peltelman Harry Minor alias Harry the Hunk Martin alias Pug Chait and Murray alias Huffty Zinebdoy. They are wanted on a charge of assault with intent to kill Samuel and Hyman Finkelman proprietors of a pool room on East Houston Street.
Dr Orrin G Cilley physician at Charles street jail told a City Council committee yesterday he was not always present when prisoners arrived or left. He added he would not inspect prisoners unless illness was reported despite committee wishes. He was recommended for dismissal last year but remains employed.
A city committee reports no oven at the jail and all prison food boiled except private bread from Norfolk. Chelsea court had committed Adam Tarzein to the jail after he shot his landlady and daughter, and he remains in dangerous condition under constant watch. Supervisor Kelley says he should have been sent to a hospital. Council may seek an explanation from the Chelsea court judge at the next meeting.
An Exchange Telegraph despatch from Rome reports a British submarine sank an Austrian hydro airplane and an Austrian torpedo boat in the upper Adriatic. Both crews were rescued and taken prisoner.

A $250,000 donation is pledged for Amherst College to fund a new library. The gift was announced at the Amherst Alumni Association of New York banquet. The donor's name was withheld by George A. Plimpton, trustee president, who said the library would memorialize a graduate from 1867 by a brother of the alumnus.

Berlin Jan 21 The Austrian government issues a decree fixing the wartime age limit at 55 years to replace territorial troops sent to the front Those aged 50 to 55 will serve six weeks at a time and only in districts outside the war zone.
Francisco Villa survived a nationwide hunt as three Carranza columns sought him dead or alive. Governor Ignacio Enriquez confirms Villa has married and now travels with his bride in a coach rather than on horseback in Chihuahua.
Enriquez said Villa had stayed in Bachinova in the western Chihuahua mountains long enough to marry. Two women, one in Cuba and one in Los Angeles, claim Villa as husband. The informant saw Villa four days ago and said Villa boasted of forcing US intervention within 30 days. Enriquez noted Villa has only a few men with him and that the informant and 40 Villa followers sought amnesty.
