New Orleans January 20 There was excitement as Carterite Senators took their seats at Mechanics Institute. A resolution declaring the extra session legal and Pinchback's election as President of the Senate and Lieutenant-Governor confirmed by 17 to 16, Pinchback casting the deciding vote. The Grand Jury returned a true bill against Pinchback Senator Butler and others for shooting and wounding on New Year’s Day. bail set at 1500 each.

Edward Freeman once a Quantrell guerrilla and Union spy, held in Louisiana, was brought to St. Louis by two men claiming Louisiana sheriffs and a Missouri governor warrant offering 6000 dollars. Gen. Harding ordered a writ of habeas corpus, and Freeman was discharged. He says he was kidnapped and drugged to the city with alleged aid from former Quantrell men in Louisiana. His prewar record is said to be rough but no charges appear since the war.
