National amusements and European contrasts in 1856
In New York on January 18, 1856 the writer contends for a national mode of popular amusement mirroring London’s lack of constraint. He cites scenes of rowdy sleigh crowds, recalls Greek Olympian games, Italian opera, Swiss autumn evenings, and compares Romantic German art with Werke of Cornelius and Kaulbach, urging a distinctly national cultural expression.
