Two steamers laden with coal limped into port after long, hard passages. The Minnetonka from Newport, England, and the Inchmona from Hull, England, suffered damaged upper works and steering gear. Crews were exhausted. one Inchmona sailor was taken to the Marine Hospital as boilers leaked and the ship nearly foundered.
The steamer Inchmona from Hull arrives at quarantine in Boston ten days late after a brutal voyage. Captain Henebery calls the trip the roughest in his 40 years at sea as hurricane winds wrecked steering gear and ice covered decks. Crew endured freezing conditions, food secured in fiddle frames, and near-fatal injuries to chief engineer Cloud and donkeyman Stein.

Julian Ralph, noted author and war correspondent, died in New York after suffering dropsy with stomach ulcer and liver enlargement. Born May 27, 1853, he reported for New York papers and joined the London Daily Mail in 1899, leaving a widow and five children.
Worcester residents press the school committee to end white wine cigars and Roman punch at high school boys banquets. A petition signed by 61 women argues for toning down youth behavior and raises the banquet cost if repeated.
Riots broke out in Lynn as Boot and Shoe Workers cutters, backed by unions, clashed with police and strikebreakers. Police endured rough treatment. six injured, seven arrests, and fears of further trouble as unions organize, with injunctions sought against the Cutters' Union.
A daring 7 pm burglary at 719 Washington street Brookline the home of Thomas F. Galvin a Boston florist. Two masked men entered via Mrs Galvin’s room after lights out and escaped with a gold watch fob a grasshopper pin and a wreath of diamonds valued around $1000. Police notified and searched the area.
New York January 20 Clara Morris is gravely ill at her Riverdale home. Close friends report the condition is serious and likely fatal. Dr R R Trotter orders rest and cancellation of all engagements as the patient endures nervous breakdown and intermittent fever.
