A Chicago & Northwestern derailment at Elmwood siding Michigan killed three passengers including Lieutenant Governor James H. MacDonald of Escanaba and William S. Cochrane of Escanaba. Horace B. Tuttle of Cleveland iron firm and E P. Foster of Marquette Ore Co. were among the seriously injured. several others hurt.
The U S cruiser Atlanta under Captain Howell leaves Brooklyn for Admiral Luce's Hayti squadron sailing for Cape Haytien then Aspinwall amid reports of Haitian political realignments. The 286 crewed ship follows news of General Legitime deserters and other regional tensions.
Special Agent I Aubrey Byrne reports alleged sugar frauds across New York and Philadelphia from 1872 to 1887. The study documents a two degree rate gap versus Boston, a sugar ring, heavy brokerage control, and a $4 0453 million revenue loss from 1881 to 1886. Fort Worth dispatch reports a mob of about thirty in Parker county attempted to lynch four Marlow brothers and Pierce during their transfer to Weatherford jail. A violent clash left two Marlows dead and four posse members killed or wounded. Pierce, Marlow, and Buckhart escaped but are said to be wounded.
New Haven police arrest F. R. Harrison on forgery and fraud charges after a letter signed Jack the Ripper threatens to murder disreputable women. Investigators find letters and cards in the same handwriting as the threatening note sent to Postmaster English. Harrison claims to work for Inspector Byrnes of New York and to be building a case locally.

Vessels include Roman from Liverpool Antwerp Jan 18 Sunbeam from Coosaw Aberdeen Jan 18 and many others headed to or from New York Boston New Orleans Havana Yokohama and Lisbon. The list also records origin ports such as New York Boston New Orleans Glasgow and Baltimore.
Late ship news lists steamers Sailea Iowa Liverpoo and Venetian Liverpool bound for Boston with January 19 20 dates. Arrivals include Normandy New York at Havre and Palestine Boston at Liverpool with Dominion Portland at Bristol Kansas.
