Metropolitan Fire Prevention Commissioner John A. O'Keefe died yesterday at his Lynn home from arterial hardening. He was the first fire prevention commissioner of Greater Boston and appointed by Governor Walsh. His fire safety methods were adopted across Massachusetts and New England.
O Keefe the fire prevention advocate helped shape outdoor fire bills and gasolene sales rules in the harbor area. He led school fire drills supervision and secured labor backing to ban cigarettes in factories. Born 1858 in Rockport, he studied at Salem schools and Harvard, practiced law in Lynn, ran for Attorney General in 1896, and chaired the commission government charter draft for Lynn.
London reports Premier David Lloyd George addressing a trade unions conference after the man power bill's passage in the House of Commons. In New Bedford on January 18 the lumber schooner Emily Baymore, waterlogged and abandoned in Buzzards Bay, was freed from ice by a navy tug and two scout patrol boats. She was towed to port to discharge 250,000 feet of spruce lumber for New York after ice damage and water intrusion.
Talks between Amalgamated Association head William D Mahon and Bay State Receiver W B Denham opened with a proposed settlement. An understanding is expected by mid next week and the matter will go to the joint conference board for action by next Thursday.
Washington January 18 Director General McAdoo named a four member public wage commission to study and advise on wage and labor questions facing the government railroad administration including the railway brotherhoods demands. He also restructured the railway system into three regional divisions East South and West with a railroad executive leading each section.
The Wage Commission chaired by Secretary Lane with members including C McChord Covington and Willcox will hear labor complaints and petitions. The board will conduct careful investigations after receiving numerous wage and labor questions from the public and four brotherhoods.
