An Aldermen order is referred to a committee amid sharp debate over Galvin's record. Aldermen Berwin and Lee clash over accuracy as the clerkship election is postponed for another vote.
Alderman Donovan chairs a three member special committee to study free transfers fare equalization and reduction on Boston street railways and to probe charter or statutory violations. The panel may hold hearings employ a stenographer and report findings with costs charged to the contingent fund of the Board of Aldermen. Aldermen Berwin Codman and Donovan named to the committee.
The third regular 1897 meeting of Boston’s Board of Aldermen focused on the city clerk contest. Alderman Berwin accused the clerk’s interference in Parkman’s hospital trustee defeat, while Alderman Lee denounced the charge. Codman moved to elect the city clerk. vote shows eight yes, four no amid heated debate and crowding in the chamber.
Brockton residents react to Harry S. Richmond's long fraud spree amounting to about 30 000 over three years. Banks in Maine discounted his forged indorsements and Rockland Savings Bank held 15 000 tied to his paper. Richmond was jailed in Plymouth awaiting grand jury action with his lumber business assets attached by Kelar Lumber Company.
Dr. John T. Lionel Simpson appeared in Municipal Criminal Court before Judge Brown, charged with perjury in a suit by Annie F Callahan against the West End railway. Bail set at 1000. case continued to January 25 after no evidence. The warrant cites two perjury acts about prior convictions in Portland and Detroit. Simpson’s counsel calls the charges an outrage and says the doctor will explain his past when tried.
Arthur Palmer shot and killed his brother Leonard at the Weaver street home in Mamaroneck New York. He fatally wounded his mother Mrs Jesse Palmer and his sister Gertrude Palmer. A posse hunts the possibly insane suspect who fled after the killings.
A runaway on Merrimac street in Haverhill injures three passengers. Frank Brown of Lawrence, Charles Bourneuf, and Mrs Grayson are thrown from carriages. two wagons and a buggy are wrecked. injuries not fatal.
Havana dispatch reports the Spanish gunboat Relampago struck by a patriot torpedo while aiding Guamo garrison on the Dante River. Centinela tried rescue operations amid Cuban fire. Relampago's crew suffered heavy casualties and many wounded. Centinela returned to Manzanillo after sustaining losses.
Revere's town hall burned early this morning, a wooden structure spreading in strong wind and endangering nearby buildings including the police station. The library and offices were lost with town records feared destroyed. Repair costs estimated at $35,000. fire likely started in a rubbish heap in the basement. Chelsea sent aid.
In Jacksonville on Jan 18 Judge Locke ruled in the United States vs. the steamer Three Friends that no state of Pan a existed and no neutrality law had been violated.
Robert I. Hanley organized a rump Senate by swearing in J. Frank Allee and Thomas Curry, amid dispute over Kent county results. The rump caucus nominated J. Edward Addicks for U.S. Senator as Democrats abstain from caucus.
Murat Halstead quotes him saying Governor Bushnell will appoint Mark Hanna to the United States Senate. The statement comes as Ohio politics focus on the 1874 scheme and party maneuvering in Cleveland.
In Baringfield Illinois the Republican caucus failed to nominate a candidate for United States Senator after two ballots and adjourned to tomorrow evening. The adjournment vote was 74 ayes to 52 nays. Mason showed the strongest support but never within seventeen votes of the nomination.
