Mayor Parker Sacks Gardiner as Police Chief in New Bedford

In New Bedford on January 18 Mayor Parker sent a letter to police chief Ezekiel C. Gardiner demanding his resignation effective January 20 over concerns with police department practices. Gardiner, who was removed in 1893 and rehired last year, did not respond. Parker suspended Gardiner, ordered return of public property to Captain James L. Wilber, and Wilber assumes command as Gardiner faces a hearing on charges for removal from the force.

West Held in Back Bay Shooting Case at Charlestown

Robert West stands at police headquarters on suspicion of the Back Bay shooting that killed Coachman James Slamin and wounded John T. Lorden on December 6. Officers traced him from Charlestown after a post office stable employee provided key details, noting West’s lameness and ownership of a revolver, a blackjack, and skeleton keys. Rebels Revolt in Hawaii San Francisco Dispatch

The United Press correspondent in Honolulu reports ignited hostilities as 600 rifles landed near Waiialae and Diamond Head. Rebels under Bob Wilcox and Sam Nowlein attack police at Bertelmann's home, shell the city, and battle volunteers and troops. Charles Lamb Carter dies of wounds, a noted reformer and lawyer in Hawaii who helped negotiate the 1898 annexation treaty.

Commanders Dine At Parker House Elect Officers

The Massachusetts Union of Knights Templars Commanders held their annual dinner at Parker House. Eminent Sir Theodore L. Kelly was elected President, Sir Charles C. Danforth Vice-president, Eminent Sir Jerome Smith Treasurer, and Sir E. P. Sherburne Secretary. The group discussed the upcoming triennial and regalia plans.

Waltham School Budget Outline for 1895 Revealed

The annual budget presented last night shows a total of 68,511.50 dollars, rising about 2000 over 1894. Items include Schools 49,894.50, janitors 3,702, evening schools 1,900, manual training 2,300, incidentals 1,275, texts 2,600, transportation 1,300, truancy 3,850, truants support 200. The School Board also backs L. C. Abbott for superintendent of public buildings and grounds.

New York Shoe Company to Move Ipswich Branch to Lynn

The New York Shoe Company with a factory on Commercial street Lynn plans to relocate a Lynn branch at once. The transferred Ipswich unit, employing about 150, will expand Lynn factory space and require larger premises.

Woburn Woman's Club Banquet Held At Vestry

Woburn January 18 the twelfth annual banquet of the Woman's Club drew 193 guests to the vestry of the First Congregational Church. Club president Mrs E Maria Bean presided and introduced speakers including Mayor Allen Reverend H C Parker ex Mayor George I Bean William F Davis Frank B Richardson Herbert B Dorr and Henry M Aldrich.

First intercollegiate gymnastic meet set for Yale Princeton

New Haven Connecticut January 18 arrangements are completed for the first intercollegiate gymnastic meet to be held in the United States at Yale gymnasium on February 27 Yale and Princeton will compete in events including double horizontal bars balancing trapeze side horse rings flying trapeze balancing ladder parallel bars club swinging double trapeze and tumbling.

Ryan's Gift in Coney Island Fight Ends in Ryan Victory

At Coney Island on January 18 Jack Dempsey failed to perform, appearing intoxicated and outmatched by Tommy Ryan who won after eight rounds as spectators protested Dempsey's condition. Two preliminaries featured Patterson over Campbell in eight and Dime over Marshall in ten. Police maintained order amid a large crowd and Brooklyn streetcar strike disruptions.
