Hartford Conn Jan 18 in the worst ice storm for years hundreds of wires fell causing lights to go out and the city to be dark. Major Kinney escaped injury when a live telephone instrument burned out as he neared it. Ice three quarters of an inch thick felled trees and damaged lines. Mattapoisett Bridges Flooded as rivers rose and bridges became unsafe. Two New Bedford men crossed flooded routes to reach the next bridge despite water half a carriage deep.

Washington obituary notes the sudden illness and peaceful death of George Bancroft, famed American history writer. He died at 3:30 p.m. after a brief period of unconsciousness, survived by his son John Bancroft and daughter-in-law. Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Church. burial in Worcester, Massachusetts, where his wife lies.
George Bancroft born Worcester Massachusetts October 8 1800, son of Reverend Aaron Bancroft D D. A prodigy educated at Phillip Academy Exeter Harvard College 1817 Göttingen Leipzig Belin and in Europe. He co founded Round Hill School Northampton 1823, published poetry and translations, and prepared a History of the United States while shaping American classical education.

Charles A Richardson longtime managing editor of the Congregationalist died of peritonitis and pneumonia after a three day illness at the Hotel Bellevue Born October 9 1829 in Franklin he taught in several towns before joining the Congregationalist in 1866 He was a vice president and director of church groups and served as president of Westfield Normal School alumni He married Mary J Phipps in 1853 and leaves two daughters Mary and one married daughter.
Edward K Weston, organist and music director at St Stephen s Episcopal Church Lynn, died at his Lewis street home from pneumonia after two weeks illness. Born in 1846 he trained in music, taught extensively, led church music here twelve years, previously served at Central Congregational and First Universalist churches. Unmarried, he belonged to Mt Carmel lodge Masons and Odd Fellows.
