Pittsfield Mass Jan 17 Joseph Butler of North Adams pleaded guilty to raping his 11 year old niece and attempting to assault two other nieces aged 7 and five. Judge Barker sentenced him in the superior court to life in state prison with 10 days solitary confinement. Butler is a 27 year old married man.
The Forty fourth Regiment Association held its annual reunion at Youngs hotel with 100 plus comrades. President Macomber chaired as officers were elected including Charles J McIntire president and G Webster treasurer. A large frame portrait exhibit and a grand dinner followed with remarks from Col Francis L Lee and others. The body authorized funds for relief and set plans to liquidate mortgage debt.
Alarm 216 sounded for a tenement fire on Avon Place Roxbury with about 50 dollars damage. A separate box 65 call reported a small chimney fire at No 14 Troy street. Delegates plan to base representation on states districts and territories with districts choosing delegates either by district or subdivided state conventions. Debate favored preserving current basis but ultimately adopted a mixed plan for 1884 convention delegates and scheduling.

Providence January 17 Governor Butler is expected in Westerly Washington county tomorrow to defend William Sprague in the matter of Canenchet. The case comes on in the court of common pleas.

fsames Barrett, an employe of Provident Wood, was killed Wednesday near the Old Colony road by the Fall River and Newport passenger train near the Broadway extension. Charles Montgomery was arrested Wednesday afternoon, charged with larceny of a wallet containing $5 from Edward W. Barstow’s prison on Knox street. John I. Wheeling was taken into custody Wednesday, charged with obtaining $260 from Capt. Avery of the Park Square hotel by false pretenses about horse merits. Frank M. Green, 19, was arrested Wednesday, charged with larceny of $38 from the Massachusetts Ocean company’s til on No. 57 Washington street where he worked.
The second annual meeting of the old Train ing-field school boys convened on Wednesday in Ivanhoe ball Charlestown. Seventy four members attended with many recollections shared. Officers elected include Caleb Rand president and Francis Childs vice president. Up to about 110 members enjoyed a collation followed by speeches from Rand Baker Schoolmaster Bites Dr Bundy and Mr Capen.

Mr Parker of Essex presented Matthew Gately’s petition for a law forcing mortgagees to render accounts and return surplus after sale. Committee on election laws to study voter protection by barring solicitation near ballot boxes. Committee on expenditures to audit treasurer securities. At 5 PM the senate adjourned to convention.
The house met at 1130 and did little business before the joint convention. Petitions were presented for water from Chebasco pond, pharmacy regulation, Heesac tunnel work, and biweekly pay for employees.
