War parade closes with flags and speeches in Charlestown

Mass Twenty-third and Twenty-fifth Regiments Sail From Fortress Monroe

A telegraphic despatch to Capt. Wm. W. McKim reports about 194 officers and men from the 23d and 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiments departed Fortress Monroe Va at 2 PM yesterday Sunday the 17th by the Steamer Ashland and will likely reach here Wednesday next.

Congress draft bill tightens exemptions and merges enrolment with the draft, raises commutation to 4 dollars, allows transfer to the Navy, and restricts exemption fees to five dollars. Surgeon General Hammond remains paralyzed after a West Coast accident while a court inquiry may review charges in the Medical bureau. Capt. W W White of the 18th Pennsylvania district is dismissed and jailed for alleged fraud. Pension data show 81,281 pension applications with about one third acted on and many delayed due to missing evidence.

Propeller Thomas Swan runs ashore near Cape Henry with Government stores

The Thomas Swan bound from New York to Fortress Monroe and Washington ran aground 25 miles south of Cape Henry at 2 am. Captain Allsworth sent three steamers to assist and plans to bring barges to lighten the propeller. Favorable weather may allow it to be refloated.

Park Barracks Renovated for Troops by Gen Dix Order

Gen Dix ordered the Park Barracks seized and prepared for troops. ColF B Howe oversaw a grueling forty eight hour labor by nearly a hundred workers to make the facility habitable. Massachusetts regiments had refused to quarter there until conditions improved. A 27th Massachusetts man was beaten by New York roughs, with his head split, money and clothes stolen while unconscious.

Steamships Bohemian and Vanderbilt Activities Reported

The steamship Bohemian under Captain Boreland sailed for Liverpool New York at 10 last evening. The steamship Vanderbilt, arriving at the Navy Yard, will return for boiler repairs after a chase near Nassau ended due to bad boilers, during which 50 bales of cotton were recovered from the chased steamer Alj.

Report Clears Stuart Raid Rumor Near Leesburg

Despatches from Gen Kelley say Major Cole Maryland cavalry returned from a scout to Leesburg. The claim that Gen Stuart led a cavalry force to attack Point of Rocks or any government position is unfounded. No armed rebels were seen within 40 miles of Leesburg.

Destructive Fire Destroys Doane Street Building

A five story marble front building at 146 Doane Street occupied by Auffmordt Hessenburg and Co and Fairchild Fanshaw burned completely. Two firemen were killed and several injured by falling walls. Loss estimated over 250000 with some adjoining properties damaged.

Express train wreck near Tyrone causes injuries

The Pennsylvania Railroad express train due at Pittsburgne? was wrecked at bridge No. 8 four miles east of Tyrone. An axle broke causing baggage express and passenger cars to derail into the creek. No deaths, several wounded. an extra train carried some injured passengers to Pittsguna.

Massachusetts and Pennsylvania troops move to Springfield

New York dispatch notes the 227 reé and men of the 27th Massachusetts under Col. Bartholomew set to leave tomorrow for Springfield. The 8th Pennsylvania Colored Regiment, about 1200 strong, passed through en route to Gen. Banks's Department.
