Estes and Lauriat announce a Wednesday morning sale in Boston after two weeks of preparation. They will cut prices on medium priced and elegant editions, moving stock to meet a 50 000 dollar reduction before February 1. Over twenty counters display bargains across standard authors and reference works. We shall be ready Wednesday at 8 30 A M.
Beroum January 16 The Reichsanzeiger publishes an indictment against Professor Gefficken who extracted from a 700 page diary confided by the late Emperor Frederick and published parts without authority. The document cites Frederick's view that publication should occur after a long posthumous interval.
United States minister Mr Phelps was the guest of honor at a Fishmongers' Company banquet in London. He said his only complaint was that leaving Britain would be harder than any duty since his arrival and hoped to see English friends again in future travels. The speech drew laughs with jokes about the fisheries dispute among a long list of distinguished attendees.
In Tunis on January 16 a vagabond Englishman named Alfree Grey was arrested. His height age and appearance match the Whitechapel murderer descriptions, but Grey remains in custody.

New York reports that at midnight ex Minister Bell was entirely conscious and no fresh danger signs appeared. His family had retired and the doctor did not foresee death for several hours.
The steamer Sarmatian has been reported off this port near Hariax on January 17 with details limited to sighting by local observers.

A Brussels report reproduces a letter from Henry M Stanley dated August 17 from Boma Benyala to Sheikh Hamed Ben Mahomed. Stanley says he reached Emin Pasha with 130 Wangwana and 66 natives, left white men well, and plans to return for further companions, noting abundance of ivory cattle and food at Emin Pasha's camp.
Secretary Fairchild transmitted a Boston Merchants Association resolution to Congress arguing that tariff administration hinges on appraiser quality. The board says salaries for principal port appraisers and assistants are inadequate and tenure should be during good behavior. The secretary endorses legislation to raise pay and secure tenure.
A board of officers named by the Secretary of War will meet in Washington to examine applicants for the position of superintendent of a national cemetery. Deputy Quartermaster Generals C G Sawtelle and Benjamin C Card and Captain John I Rodgers will serve. The President accepted Lt James S Jowett’s resignation, effective January 15, 1889.
A Washington report notes the New England Tobacco Growers Association asks the Senate tariff bill subcommittee to abolish internal revenue duties on cigars and tobacco raise the stemmed tobacco duty to 30 cents a pound and admit tobacco stems free of duty.
Mr and Mrs Charles F Chamberlayne entertained about 125 guests at Hotel Kimball on Allston street after their extended wedding trip. The bride Miss Katherine B Prince was a familiar figure in Winchester social life where her family has long resided. Notable attendees included Rev N K Bishop Somerville Miss Hayes Cambridge Mr and Mrs Henry F Miller Mrs A Cutter Miss Alice Joy Mr George Dunham Miss Annie Bradbury of Winchester and several Boston and Brookline residents.
The 1880 common council held its annual reunion at Youngs Hotel with President Harvey N Shep ard and guests Ex Clerk Washington P Gregg Police Commissioner Lee City Messenger Peters and Clerk Joseph O Kane. Mayor Hart spoke as a member of that year’s council and other speeches songs and recitations followed. One speaker noted the 1880 cohort produced a Mayor a Senator six Representatives five council presidents and nine aldermen.

Washington January 16 Congressmen and Mrs Russell plan to depart Washington March 4 after final duties to their constituents. Their Arlington second floor rooms are booked for Monday noon as Mary Anderson comes for a week long engagement at the leading theatre.
In West Haven a skating party of three women and six men fell through ice near a dam. All six men jumped in to save the women, struggled to reach solid ice, and were rescued when 18 year old Fred Morris brought a fence rail and carried the group to safety. The party left for New Haven without thanking Morris.
Vice-President elect Morton and Mrs Morton have taken quarters in Washington with Mr Blaine and his family. Mr William Walter Phelps arranged rooms at the Normandie for the Mortons, who are expected to arrive tomorrow, amid cabinet speculation.
Thirteen North Salem residents were arrested for assaulting John C. Welch on December 26. The group, part of a White Caps faction, tied a rope around Welch neck grease his coat and ordered him to leave town. They pleaded nolo contendere and were fined 15 dollars plus costs for eleven members and 10 dollars plus costs for two others.
