Southern Caucus fights over Calhoun report in session

From a Washington letter dated Sunday the southern caucus debate ended with Calhoun's report adopted by a slim majority of eight to seven. The fight continues in caucus tomorrow. A Burlington bachelor’s levee, a gin house burn on a southern cotton plantation, and a sale of paintings for the United States were noted. In Houston an affray led David Allen to kill William Jones he announced to the circuit court but was not arrested. Oliver Stevens and James Bird were arrested in Bexar county for highway robbery of Nicholas Cook. The cholera reached Baton Rouge with five deaths.

Senate and House Debates Shape Navy and Land Bills

In Senate actions on Tuesday, Doug las proposed a substitute for his California bill while a naval yard inquiry at Key West was adopted. Bills on assignee rights for militia warrants and a California land measure drew debate, with recommittal motions and executive session following. In the House, efforts to force peace without war failed, while reports and debates covered Panama transit, naval books for officers, and mileage controversies. The day ended with committee debates on civil and diplomatic bills and flogging, DC improvement, and residency mileage rules before adjournment.
