Remarkable Civil War Escape Through Tennessee Hills

An account details a Confederate escapee's perilous night trek to evade pursuit. After a near encounter with a picket, he rides to a Union household seeking aid for sugar and coffee, bribing a guide with gold. He travels by multiple perilous routes, slipping past cavalry, and survives attacks on villages as Yankees sweep the region. The tale credits Hines's enterprise, a farmer’s aid, and the general's fortune for the escape, ending with the claim of a near-miraculous survival and the wife's prayers.
