A major blaze damages the B M railroad system forcing suspension of over one third of the 600 daily trains for several days. Thousands are stranded in stations as crews open the Fitchburg depot and eastern freight yards to restore service.
Boston mayor elect James M. Curley left the Merchants' Limited for Washington after his campaign. He planned to meet President Wilson to push a hearing on the Burnett Willingham immigration bill and to urge Secretary Daniels to award the supply ship contract to Charles.

Mayor-elect Curley may lead the new machine with Curley backers arguing he is under no strong obligation to Martin Lomasney. A blaze caused by a defective chimney drove five families from a three story wooden building at 360 362 Dudley street Roxbury shortly before midnight. Oliver J. Jordan a Boston Elevated employee sleeping in the room where flames began was helped outside by Patrolman Casey. Mrs Minnie Hawes and her seven year old daughter Florence woke neighbors and all residents dressed and escaped to the street in cold weather. The fire climbed from the second floor to the third and also burned into the roof. the adjacent unoccupied third story was not affected.

Concord N H Jan 14 Harry K Thaw said he did not believe William Travers Jerome would come here to protest his bail. The New York State attorney says he will pursue the matter and urged Federal Judge Aldrich not to schedule the hearing before mid next week though no date was set.
Judge Aldrich remains at his son's Brookline home with a cold. His illness may push the hearing on Jerome's request to late next week or later if symptoms persist or worsen.
