Secretary Lamar submits views on the Bell Telephone patent of March 7 1876 urging government driven inquiry. He argues the United States may vacate a wrongful patent and that proceedings should be instituted in the government name to fully investigate fraud and patentability.
In Cleveland Ohio the stand pipe feeding the lake crib tunnel froze with fine ice and choked the water supply tonight. Reservoirs hold a little water but the city is practically dry. Fire risk increases as officials fear removal by tomorrow. The 90 foot high nine foot diameter pipe is packed with ice and thawing seems unlikely soon.
Gloucester Massachusetts January 14 Sailor schooner Mabel Dilaney is officially given up as lost after a December bad weather voyage. The crew of sixteen includes master John Longon and cook Joseph Martin among others with widows awaiting news. The vessel built in Essex in 1882 weighed seventy eight tons and carried $6100 insurance with Gloucester’s Manual Fishing Office.
Wendell Foss of Easton admits to the Harvell Wentworth killing near Brownfield Maine on January 4. Confession given in Ossipee jail as he awaits extradition papers from Governor Currier. Foss, 73, shows brooding remorse and blames the Wentworth family for past losses. authorities describe a fatal wound inflicted with a knife.
Nantasket Lodge No 1078 K of H in Codasset Mass installed officers led by District Deputy Grand Dictator Joshua Vinal. New officers include Vast Dictator W R Lincoln, dictator T A Rich, vice-dictator A H Tower Jr, and others with delegates from Hingham Weymouth and Quincy. After installation, speeches followed.
In New Haven on January 14 two barges the Fatinitza and the Etta Bourne towed by the Roslyn reached port for safety. The Fatinitza leaked and the Etta Bourne was cut through by ice and sunk after the crews escaped in a boat. Both vessels towed with pig iron for New London and Northern Railroad.
A newly painted vessel after house about 123 feet wide and 20 feet long was found ashore near Roaring Brook Chilmark. Two human skeletons bound by rope were recovered, likely victims of the City of Columbus wrecked off Gav Head two years earlier, with shoes washing ashore.
Representatives from Western lines with Eastern links met at the Windsor Hotel Chicago to form a pooling association. George E Blanchard was chosen as commissioner and accepted the post. The roads represented included the Chicago and Atlantic Baltimore and Ohio Pennsylvania Lake Shore and Grand Trunk.
Senator Sherman arrived from Washington at 4 PM and was greeted by a legislative committee. He was welcomed in the House of Representatives with an address by Hon. Charles Whitcomb, tied to a Livermore robbery yielding 1060 dollars, arrived in Lewiston and was taken to Livermore tonight. The Barker boy, fled to New York, remains at large.
Samuel Landry ended his life by suicide this afternoon at Nashua when he placed his head beneath a Boston train as it departed. Authorities described him as probably insane.

Reports from Newport News describe about 2000 bales of cotton burned on the British steamer Mathew Bedlington. A wood chopper in Salem Depot New Hampshire left a fire unattended and awoke to find his bed ablaze, losing a house and $1500 insurance. In Boston a chimney fire spread to a varnish and alcohol storage area, with losses of $600 to $700 and $100 in building damage. Additional blazes in Clinton Street and Butler's Hotel prompted extensive firefighting and street sights as crews battled walls bulging and thawing pipes caused minor fires with tens of dollars in damage.

Providence Jan 14 The commissioners report in Municipal Court on the estate of Edwin Hoyt of the Arm of Hoyt Spragues and Co shows total claims 3 537 349 41 with 1 109 930 allowed and 1 835 250 disallowed.
The morning session at Benificent Congregational Church opened with singing scripture reading and a prayer by Miss Halsey of New York. A letter of greeting from the Woman’s Board of the ta- is noted in the proceedings.
Delegates from the Foreign Missionary Society of the M EK Church the Women s Baptist Missionary Society and the Free Baptist Missionary Society attended. Miss E Harriet Stanwood secretary of the bureau of exchange read Unforeseen Occasions in Our Foreign Work and Mrs H Hayes spoke on The Demands of the Age Upon Christian Women. The session closed with singing.
A Knights of Labor meeting at Dudley Street Opera House Boston Highlands drew a large crowd including many women. District Master Workman Carlton urged education over strikes, pushed for equal privileges, and cited proposed reforms like Employers Liability and curbing corporation power. Speakers Pickard Lemon and Biggs followed with arbitration praise before a luncheon.

Bakers meet in Pittsburg and adopt a constitution to form a National Union of German Bakers with headquarters in New York. The group aims to raise intellectual status, shorten work hours, and raise and standardize wages. Telegrams arrive from San Francisco Omaha Fantas City Boston and the National Makers Association of Germany.
The steamer Canada from the French line docked in New York on January 14. Among the passengers were Newark boys Willie Lane Eddie Ryan Austin Fitzgerald and Patsy Reynolds sent to Paris for Pasteur hydrophobia treatment. Also aboard were Dr Billings of Newark and Mrs Ryan mother of Eddie. The patients are in good health.
Lawrence Pendergast, 33, former legislator representing Burillville, shot himself with laudanum at the Bijou Hotel in Providence tonight. The death appears linked to ongoing dissipation and personal troubles.
In Worcester Massachusetts on January 14 the Sons and Daughters of Vermont held their thirteenth annual reunion with about four hundred attendees. Members spoke and representatives from the Maine New York and New Hampshire associations attended the event.
Taunton Mass Jan 14 the board of tract held its first annual dinner with ninety members and guests present. Speakers included Hon William Reed Jr Mayor Hale City Treasurer Washburn and Dr BE W Jones among others.
New York January 14 Mr Pierson of Commissioner Finks office today reduced emigrant rates to Chicago from New York from 3 to 7 dollars.
Detectives Amos and Rhodes of Boston arrived in Montreal in pursuit of McNeil the Lancaster bank cashier who absconded. They traced him to a French Canadian hotel near Bonaventure but have yet to locate him further. He arrived Jan 2 by the Central Vermont express carrying a grip and appeared ill at ease.
Clinton January 14 The Lowe Cattle Company counsel demanded the bank books and records from Bank Examiner Gatchell who refused per Comptroller Cannon order. Chief Wade brought securities found at Tinmouth for inspection while Chief Ware kept papers. Detectives Hayter and Coon moved between towns amid rumors of disclosures and anticipated new developments.
Annie Bowers a deft young woman about 22 was arrested by Patrolman Grady for larceny. Known in city intelligence offices for seeking private domestic work she allegedly took valuables from several households after brief trials. Her latest victim Mrs. Annie Quirk of 616 Tremont Street lost about 69 dollars and other items. She is due to answer in Municipal Court this morning.
A banquet at Vercelli's new restaurant on Boylston Street marked the opening in Boston of a recently renovated establishment. Mr Colburn of the Traveler led the gathering as guests enjoyed an elaborate menu and praised the supper rooms and decor.
The Roxbury Club welcomed about 200 guests at its Warr en street Tolman place clubhouse hosted by Major George Curtis. Cuarter's orchestra provided music and Caterer Blount served supper. The club, organized in October, counts 225 members with Hon. N. J. Bradlee as president, A W Tufts as vice president, and Robert Moli bean as secretary treasurer.
News from River Head New York reports the fishing smack Eliza Baker captained by Moshier with six crew is lost at sea after a late storm wrecked much of Gardner's bay scallop fleet off Promised Land. Vessels wrecked include Seven Brothers Crazy Jane Sappho Hempstead Chief and others. crews are reported safe.
A novelty social event in Palladio Hall Boston Highlands last night hosted by Jewell Lodge No. 21 Knights and Ladies of Honor drew about 100 couples. Buf fum's orchestra provided music while ladies wore tissue paper costumes in varied colors. Floor direction was by William T. Phinney with several assistants including F. M. Hemmenway F. H. Haynes and several ladies.
A grand ball in Claremont New Hampshire attracted many out of town guests. About 100 couples joined the grand march with Blaisdell's orchestra of Concord providing music. The Indias' toilets were the most elaborate seen in the state event.
The six month old strike at BE S Wheeler & Co. East Haven mill ended today. About seventy of 120 strikers will return to work tomorrow as both sides claim concessions were made. The firm and workers differ on who gained the point.
Fall River mass January 14 the striking weavers at the Seaconner mill vote to resume work tomorrow if the discharged overseer is reinstated. Officials anticipate a settlement of the dispute.
Mr and Mrs Caleb A Curtis hosted about 700 guests at Berkeley Hall last evening. Baldwin's band of eighteen played for dancing as Florist Dole staged lavish reception rooms with tropical flowers and ornate furnishings. Hamilton and Miss Curtis led the German. canaries hung from the ceiling amid exotic blooms and special flower favors for the ladies. Caterer George Burton and assistant Fred Crane provided a sumptuous repast.
Rev Charles W Wendte spoke on Concentration at the Christian Union noting success rests on directing power to one object. He cited Ignatius Loyola and Goethe and warned against aimless reading and widespread dissipation. Robert M Morse Jr will speak next Thursday on Ethics of Legal Practice.
City officials gathered in the Mayor's room as Mayor Hart Aldermen Vennard and Day witnessed the oath of office administered by City Clerk Parsons. Marshal Neal announced no major changes and named Loring Burrill Jr lieutenant William Thurston commitment officer and William Stern clerk. A horse collision on Western avenue injured Wallace's horse valued at $600, requiring euthanization. Market House Company re-elected the old board at its annual meeting.
The Reymond excursion party met in New Orleans at the Parker House with about forty attendees led by Dr. Gay. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. W. L. P. Boardman, Mr and Mrs. J. L. Cobb of Lewiston, Hon. John N. Wood, Jeremiah Briggs of Providence, Edmond Charles, and W. Raymond. A Canada visiting party gathered at Young's Hotel with toastmaster H B Little and speeches by Henry F. Miller BE B Eddy H R Williams John Ranald Charles Bulls Benjamin E. Porter and George H. Bacheldor. About forty were present.
The association welcomes G. G. Snow a leading shoe manufacturer along with Warren G. Howard Dr B A Chase James Luddy and Henry Ss Bicknell. Season starts about April 17 and ends Oct 23 with ten players’ names to be announced by Manager McGunnigle.
Rev C R Elliot of the First Unitarian Church hosted a vestry reception last evening. The third levee of the Dorchester Young Men's Catholic Lyceum drew about 125 couples with D Frank Leary as floor erector assisted by J Burns H Reddington J P F O Neil T Reddington T Hoar M Hoar D J Coleman E J McCormick and D Hurley guiding the event.
In Arlington Massachusetts on January 14 the District Court before Judge Kelley did not press the manslaughter case against Weston D. Harms and John W. Leonard of Holbrook. A complaint for assault and battery was issued and both defendants were bound over in 500 dollars to await grand jury action.

El Paso Texas January 14 Lord Delaval Beresford who oversees the San Domingo ranch in Chihuahua Mexico arrived here today. He says reports reached the ranch of a clash between government scouts and hostile Indians near Casas Grandes in which six scouts were killed.
Stephen McPherson, a Black man, was convicted in Philadelphia on the charge of arsenic and battery with intent to kill for an attack in November on Robert J. Cook, business manager of the Express. He received a six years and six months sentence.
Montreal dated report states troops are being readied for service in the Northwest as trouble with the Blackfeet and Blood Indians is anticipated. The government plans to have a substantial force ready to meet any imminent war path.
Marshfield Massachusetts January 14 The inquest into the dike explosion was resumed before Judge Damon but after considering confidential evidence the inquiry was adjourned for one week.
The crew of the schooner General Gordon, which stranded last Saturday, arrived in Liscomb last night aboard their small boat. The Gordon sailed from Souris Prince Edward Island bound for Providence with a cargo of potatoes.
Sydney Rosenfeld the dramatic author was arrested in Philadelphia on January 11 charged with conspiracy to defraud and annoy John A. McCaul theatrical manager. He is held on one thousand dollars bail.
The comptroller of the currency announces a second dividend of 12 percent for creditors of the First National Bank of St. Albans Vermont.
Detective Al Dearborn of Boston and Hollander of L. P. Hollander & Co. visit Montreal to pursue a case connected with recent silk thefts attributed to Louis Hammondal of Maesgrs Henry Morgan & Co.'s establishment.

The Gettysburg Pilgrims gathered for their first reunion at the Quincy House with eighty five attendees including ladies. The group recalled the battlefield trip and discussed joining the Gettysburg Club. James H. Cruff presided. W V Vanamridge and others spoke. Cruff received a valuable elect as tribute for his efforts managing the Gettysburg trip.
John H Clarke of I. D. Richards & Sons married Alice A. Stevens of Boston yesterday in a ceremony conducted by Rev. O. P. Gifford. A reception followed at 36 Paris Street East Boston. they will reside there and depart today for Washington and the South. Guests sent costly gifts including a marble clock chair rugs and smoking set.
The English high school class of 1880 held its annual dinner at Youngs Hotel last evening with many attendees. Officers elected for the year include President Francies W. Sprague Vice presidents M Wolf and A H Bowman Secretary Treasurer George H Pigott Orator John H Casey Class poet H Leadbister and Toastmaster Warren Demoid.
