In Albany on January 12 Chauncey M Depew was nominated unanimously by a joint Republican caucus of senators and assemblymen for United States Senator. The selection follows a long career in law business and public service with high praise from Speaker Elsberg and others and sets Depew to face Washington as a Republican standard bearer for New York next week.
Chauncey Mitchell Depew, born in Peekskill April 23 1884, rose from Yale graduate to partner in Republican politics and Vanderbilt railways. He served as attorney for New York Central, joined the board, and became general counsel and director across the Vanderbilt system, with early ties to Lincoln and Seward era politics.
Ten stockholders of the Klondike Yukon and Copper River Company sue in Circuit Court seeking a receiver, injunction, accounting, and dissolution on grounds of insolvency and alleged misused funds by president Frank Buffington Vrooman. They claim Alaska and Northwest Territory fields are valuable, while Vrooman accuses minor stockholders of conspiring to gain control. Vrooman, once a church pastor, has notable family ties to pensions and politics.
In Harrisburg on January 12 the Pennsylvania Senate and House named candidates for United States Senator. Democrats backed George A. Jenks while Republicans proposed John Dalzell Charles W. In Vernal Utah on January 12 reports talk of rich gold finds twenty five miles east of town in the Blue Mountains near the Colorado line. The finder is Doc McDonald a veterinary surgeon of the Ninth Cavalry who learned of the deposit from an East Utah man named Johnson. McDonald began prospecting after the unit returned to Fort Duchesne.
Attachments totaling about forty thousand dollars have been placed on the Marshall Paper Company property at Turner’s Falls after the company made an earlier assignment to Joseph W Stevens, president of the First National Bank of Greenfield, and Whitcomb of Worcester. Robert G. Porter former jeweller of Woodbury New Jersey shot himself in the head at the St James Hotel Washington last night. The death was discovered today after his room was forced open. A note to Representative Loudensinger asked that money in his possession be used to bury him at Woodbury. He leaves a widow and three children after selling his business last summer.
