New York January 12 The executive committee of the American forest congress met January 10 at the Astor house and decided to hold the next session in Boston on September 1. George Augustus Sala received an informal reception at the Press club this afternoon with President Amos J. Cummings delivering the welcome. At Madison Avenue Congregational church society a disputed vote ousted Rev Dr Newman from trustees, prompting claims of invalid ballots. Charles Rose longtime drum major at West Point and veteran of the Black Hawk era died at West Point on Saturday.
A pair of late night cyclones swept Jones and Baldwin counties in Georgia and Hale Perry and Bibb counties in Alabama. Homes barns gin houses fences were destroyed and livestock harmed though no lives were reported lost in Georgia. In Alabama one death was reported near Centreville and thousands of dollars in property damage, with nearly 1000 trees blocking roads near Randolph.
Charles R. Clark of Springfield fell intoxicated on Cross Street injuring a leg at 3 45 P M Monday. Peter Perrin was arrested on a larceny warrant for a wagon valued at 40 dollars of John Wilson of Dedham. Portland officers hunted William and Charles Dorman, 15 and 17, in Portland for breaking and entering. Inspector Knox arrested Bernard McKinney on charges of obtaining 175 dollars by false pretenses from Jonathan Schan of Arlington. William Sherman of D street South Boston is a self described driver of a heroio horse and was jailed Monday night on drunkenness charges. While driving near Columbus avenue he crossed to Carleton street and, while skirting the Boston and Providence railroad tracks, backed the horse and vehicle over an embankment, crashing onto the rails where officers of the fifth Division found him.
North Adams lawyer Charles J. Parkhurst Welcome B Cook and wife indicted by Pittsfield grand jury for blackmail of shoe dealer Timothy Riordan. Mrs Cook acts as witness. Riordan offered 750 and 1060 demanded, scandal erupts, could affect Parkhurst Berkshire bar privilege.
