Senator Douglas Denounces Slidell For Slavery Allegation
The note from Senator Douglas published Saturday refutes John Slidell’s denial of authorizing or countenancing a Chicago Press and Tribune report claiming slaves belonging to Douglas’s Mississippi children were abused. Douglas states he did not authorize attacks and explains his earlier denouncement of a fabrication, urging public exposure of the true author of the calumny.
