Lawrence January 11 The life of Old Black Joe the kicking fire horse faces a death sentence after a dramatic public dispute. An Andover man vows to cure him by work as reporters hint at a wider controversy continuing on page three.
Anthracite coal fell fifty cents per ton after tax removal and freight rate drops. Dealers nationwide followed, with prices now at furnace, 1.75, stove 15, chestnut 15, while pea coal remained at 10.50 per ton. Consumers save fifty cents per ton on kitchen range and furnace coal.
A thief stole Police Commissioner Curtis’s car from Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street and drove it through a blizzard to Humboldt Avenue where a Dudley Street station officer found it against a curb. The car, number 368, belonged to Mrs Curtis and was missing about two hours as around eighteen hundred policemen searched for the thief.
Clarence W. Loud faces a life trial in East Cambridge Superior Criminal Court for the murder of Policeman James A. Preston of Wakefield. Judge Brown admits Preston’s notebook with Loud’s name and Loud’s auto license found in the officer’s cap as evidence. Continued on Page 18-First Col.

The region witnessed a violent northeast storm that killed five people across New England and the North Atlantic. George E. Ham died in Derry from overexertion at a railroad depot. John Gomes drowned off Highland Light in Provincetown. Attilio Rinaldi, a Framingham section hand, was killed by a passenger train. John Baldie, of Framingham, died wading through snow in Springfield. An unidentified man also died in the harsh weather. The storm moved swiftly and out to sea.
