A massive explosion at a munitions plant in New Jersey erupts with 500 000 shells ready for shipment to Russia. The blast destroys the township and leaves 1400 workers evacuated. 17 people reported missing but no confirmed injuries or deaths. Nearby areas within ten miles suffer shocks and ongoing search efforts.
Allies present to President Wilson a plan demanding restoration of Belgium Serbia and Montenegro with indemnities and evacuation of French Russian and Romanian territories. The terms require clear restitution and security measures from the defeated powers and allied nations.
Translation of the French text outlines proposed restoration of Alsace Lorraine and other territories, expulsion of Turks from Europe, and reorganization of Europe under nationality and security guarantees. Charles E. Miller a 30 year old former Tufts College and University of Pennsylvania student was arrested on charges of stealing securities and jewelry valued at 22 265 during a New Year party hosted at a downtown hotel. He faced a court appearance to answer the theft charges.
When searched at police headquarters yesterday afternoon, following his arrest at a West Newton street house by officers, the suspect was processed and additional charges were anticipated.
Governor McCall resolves militia dispute over custody of the Common wealth Armory. Colonel John H. Sherburne of the Bay State Field Artillery Regiment keeps custodianship while four rooms are assigned to Brigadier General E. Leroy Sweetser commander of the Second Massachusetts Brigade. General Sweetser may establish headquarters in the State House or elsewhere, location to be approved by the Governor.
Harry K. Thaw lies in bed in street clothes after a failed attempt on his own life. Officials say he did not want to be arrested and described him as “ordinary criminal” while a photo shows him in Pittsburg from a month ago.
Philadelphia dispatch reports Thaw’s condition as very doubtful after he attempted suicide in Philadelphia. Doctors at St Mary’s Hospital say recovery is uncertain and a poison cause may be determined in two to three days if he survives. Thaw slashed his throat and left wrist with a razor before surrendering to police in New York over a flogging case. He has a fair chance of recovery and remains hospitalized.
Thaw, 47, tried to take his life in a parlor at 5260 Walnut Street in a modest two story apartment house occupied by Mrs. Elizabeth Tacot. He had been hiding there since Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. living as Mr. West.
The city endured a brutal cold snap as temperatures fell 38 degrees in 24 hours. By midnight Boston registered eight above zero, the lowest of the season. Forecasters predicted further freezing and a chance of snow by Saturday with a slight warming afterward.

Boston radio stations picked up wireless warnings issued in French and English from Bermuda and British and French cruisers along the Atlantic coast. The alert tells vessels to keep sharp lookout for enemy raiders anywhere in the Atlantic and to take all precautions. No cruiser locations or names were disclosed.
New York January 11 fire and a series of blasts at the Canadian Car and Foundry plant near Kingsland New Jersey destroyed the facility storing hundreds of thousands of shells for Russia. No deaths reported though 17 workers missing. Loss could reach 4 million dollars. The site employed about 1400 with 40 to 50 buildings over 80 acres. The plant filled shells using trinitrotoluene as a chief explosive component.
A large blast caused by shells lacking fuses led to a disaster after a fire started in building No 30 where shells were cleaned with denatured alcohol. The widely accepted theory blames crossed ceiling wires causing insulation to drop into the alcohol.
James Parnell a 25 year old steamfitter's helper living at 3 Bay State road Cambridge slipped on his second day on the job. He and a supervisor poured hot solder onto a cold pipe when boiling metal splashed onto his face and neck. He was rushed to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary likely to lose sight in both eyes.
The Massachusetts Legislature 4000 Knights of Pythias and 3000 Baraca and Philathea Union members attended Billy Sunday at the Tabernacle. He preached on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde urging men and women to let Jesus Christ govern their wills. Reported 551 attendees started the trail toward transformation.
