In a Superior Court session yesterday the defendant testified denying Fitzgerald's charges in full. Washington Jan 11 John H Allen of Maine and T J McCarty of Massachusetts have been appointed to clerks in the Postoffice Department under civil service rules at a $900 salary each.
Washington reports Professor Ferdinand V. Hayden of the United States geological survey has resigned due to continued ill health. Boston Post Office receipts for the quarter ended December 31 show 456,277, up from 422,346. Providence 52,089, up from 48,686. Hartford 86,317, up from 56,671. Negotiations with China on restricting coolie labor near completion and a treaty amendment will be submitted to the Senate. Senate secret session also urges President to negotiate with Nicaragua for an inter-oceanic canal concessions.
Joseph E. E. Roy, a Lowell physician for four years, was arrested after a year of shop robberies at I. Bourke & Co. His office housed a Saratoga trunk filled with dresses and goods valued over $500, with confederates disposing of them in Canada and Manchester, N H. A young woman, Matilda Barbillard, linked to him, was detained then released. Detectives pursue more arrests as Roy’s scheme expanded to free gas by tying a rubber tube to the pipes.

Officers Coggan Rideout and Sheehan arrested John Healy alias Murdering Jack and James Burke for assault and battery and attempt to rob Leopold Friedman at 9 Endicott Street. The pair entered Friedman's store pretended to view goods seized Friedman by the throat knocked him down and tried to steal a gold watch and chain. Healy previously served time in Moyamensing Penitentiary and eighteen months in the local house of correction for assault with a knife.
A. C. Williams, about 53, lumber dealer at Charlestown, died at his Franklin street home East Somerville. An autopsy was performed. cause of death unclear. Neighbors report late night cries and suspicions of poisoning. physicians and police declined to reveal findings.
