Extra Session of the Senate in March 1849
President Polk issues circular calling the United States Senate to meet on March 5 at 10 in the forenoon to receive communications from the executive. Reports note market declines for stock and bonds, plus local elections in Pittsburg and Allegany, and Baltimore maritime updates as winter ice and cold threaten harbor activity.

Congressional action in Senate and House on private bills and mileage
The Senate discussed and postponed John P. Baldwin's claim while passing Bentons synoptical index bill. The California bill was set as Monday week’s order. In the House, printing copies for Buffalo harbor report faced debate with Hall defending cost and Toombs’ remarks. The civil and diplomatic bill proceeded in committee, mileage pay debates followed, and the House adjourned after a Belcher report.
