Boston day schools will reopen next Monday in about 170 of 2065 buildings on a part time basis. The school committee meeting last night noted coal shortages may prevent opening some schools. names will appear in tomorrow's papers. Fuel Administrator James J. Storrow issued a drastic edict directing seizure of coal consignments to manufacturers for public use.
A Petrograd despatch reports Bolshevik premier Nikolai Lenine has traveled to a Finland sanitarium for several days rest. The move comes amid ongoing post revolution unrest and international tensions.

Nathan Matthews Jr. told Boston City Club diners last night that city departments are in the worst state possible and that the incoming administration must reform public service. He urged retiring three fourths of current department heads and municipal boards to speed the changes.
Former Mayor John F Fitzgerald replied to Mr Matthews asserting that 95 percent of executives were efficient and had gained their positions via the civil service list. Peters made no reference to Matthews suggestions. The dinner was attended by about five members including Nathan Matthews Jr Thomas N Hart Josiah Quincey and John F Fitzgerald.
Taunton reports Private Herbert Bb. Barney of the American Aero Squadron is the first Taunton volunteer killed in action in France. The 22 year old, a former mercerizer at Mt Hope Finishing Co., was educated at Taunton and belonged to Taunton Lodge of Elks and North Dighton Methodist Episcopal Church. He enlisted about six months ago and his death was relayed to his mother, Mrs Minnie Barney of 428 Somerset Avenue, by Adjutant General McCain in Washington.

A review quotes the Komische Volks Zeitung opposing President Wilson on self determination and territorial changes in Austria-Hungary and Turkey. It cites the Berliner paper branding the Entente leaders as deceivers and mocks their insistence on severing Alsace Lorraine and Prussian lands while praising German views.

Seven thousand tons of high grade bituminous coal were found beneath a condemned trestle in the Williamstown Boston & Maine railroad yards by road surveying engineers. Katherine Fahey an 18 year old Charlestown girl was taken into custody with eight men after police armed with revolvers forced entry. Four other suspects including women are being sought. The gang leader Jeremiah Galvin of 608 East Second Street South Boston was said to have drawn a revolver. Others detained include Joseph Barrett 22 of 11 Sachem Street Roxbury and Thomas A Barry 20 of 57 West Cedar Street West End.
In Joplin Missouri on January 10 Fred Fulton of Rochester Minnesota stopped Harry Texas Tate of Novata Oklahoma in the second round of a scheduled twelve round bout Tate was knocked down twice before a decisive jaw blow ended the fight with Fulton winning by knockout on the second round.
