In Berne on January 10 a centuries old church near Sion collapsed during a divine service, burying worshippers. Firefighters recovered forty bodies with many others injured as panic spread and villagers believed an earthquake struck. The ruin was caused by time worn pillars in the crypt.
In Chicago on January 10 Miss Anna Rubinwitch shot the man she loved after believing another suitor gained her affection. She wounded him seriously and then killed herself, ending a tense, fatal crisis of passion.
Moses Shackford of 22 Newhall Street suffered severe burns to the face head and hands when a furnace overheated triggering a blaze in his Malden home. The fire caused about 1000 dollars in damage. Shackford called the fire department after detecting smoke while bathing at about 1 50 oclock. Firefighters controlled the fire quickly.
Miss Bertha Yablowsky was shot in bed by her longtime friend Miss Rubinwitch at the Zuckerman home where the victim stayed. A second shot wounded Rubinwitch, who was taken to County Hospital and questioned by police.
President-elect Maclaurin said a new site for the Institute of Technology will likely be chosen within six months. He noted finances are the main issue and current quarters are overcrowded, hindering growth.
Dr. Maclaurin says no move will occur until sufficient funds are secured and a clear site is chosen from multiple offers. He warns state aid is small, tuition may rise, and the institute must cut entering classes unless money improves to expand staff and cover costs.
Jan 10 fire in a Dedham home forced John P. Wims of Weatherby Street to flee smoke. He entered the bathroom to escape and tried to put his head under water from a faucet. Firefighters found his body with a limb in the tub as water flowed from the faucet.
About 8 30 tonight Mr Wims 50 lived alone in a harness shop dwelling. A fire began at the foot of the stairs from a gasoline stove explosion and smoke suffocated him. Fire Chief Winn and Patrolman Hogan found the body. Dr Pratt said death due to suffocation. Mrs Wims away at a neighbor’s when fire was extinguished.
Several thousand Texas school children sign petitions urging President Roosevelt to spare wild animals on his African journey. M B Travis of Waco, head of the Texas Audubon Society, circulates the petitions aiming to exceed 500000 signatures from Texas students.
President Roosevelt公開 disclosed an alleged Tillman link to an Oregon land deal. Senator Hale urged withdrawal citing Tillman’s illness and risk of death, but the President refused and published the report.

Washington January 10. The Sun day Times says Roosevelt and Taft are near a disagreement over Taft excluding William Loeb Jr from the new cabinet. Roosevelt’s temper is said to be unsettled by the move and the dispute centers on the power to appoint Loeb.
The Times notes Mr Loeb faces Rooseveltism opposition and that Frank H Hitchcock will join the Cabinet but not as national chairman. It says cabinet construction trends aim to minimize Roosevelt ideas, with officials in touch with key interests predicting reduced Roosevelt influence in the next administration.
A stranger on the Whitneys' front stoop fled after pulling a revolver when confronted. Patrolman Reiser fired his gun but missed. A field pursuit ended with a handcuffed suspect, identified as Charles Davis of Tremont Street, with odd properties found at two Tremont addresses.
Police chase Davis after a break in the Roxbury district. Davis shoots at residents, escapes through Humboldt avenue and Crawford street, while Officer Reiser and others pursue and fire shots in the streets amid a crowded neighborhood.
William Meehan a 25 year old black smith of 13 Pierce street Hyde Park. William Mateer park patrolman of 5 Corwin street Dorchester. Walter G Lugton 29 Pierce street Hyde Park. Alexander Lugton 15 Hubbard street Hyde Park. Ira D McIntyre 7 West Street listed among residents.
In Hyde Park two youths and a longtime resident drown after thin ice gives way at Ponkapoag Pond. William Meehan, 2, and Walter Lugton, plus Lugton’s brother Alexander and Ira D. McIntyre, all fall through while ice fishing. Patrolman William Mateer of the Metropolitan Police dies in the incident. Meehan’s companions narrowly escape fate thanks to McIntyre and a board used to reach Meehan.

The week kicks off with school basketball, weather delaying ice hockey. Springs field eyes a busy yachting season as suburban teams join. Commercial league bowlers posted a strong showing last week.
