Gloucester sailors lost Hustler and John E McKenzie foundered
Owners publish crew lists after both vessels disappear in the North Atlantic. The Hustler of 92.17 tons built in 1889 from Essex carried 18 crew and a captain from Port Hastings plus men from Newfoundland Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The John E McKenzie of 130 tons built in 1893 carried 18 crew led by Captain Andrew McKenzie and was based in Gloucester. Officials fear a Grand Banks gale or a transatlantic liner collision doomed both ships with all hands lost.

Crowds packed the auditorium capacity of 5000 and overflow meetings were announced. The Tippecanoe Club of Cleveland arrived in two sections with delegates from Bushnell MecKisson and Hanna. Over 1000 visitors came from Cleveland. A wheel came off a Gatling gun wagon injuring several. Herbert Reynolds of Newark died and Harry Butts of Newark was seriously hurt.
