A Jan 10 report describes a gale that carries away the Niagara Falls Clifton House bridge, with $400,000 in losses and high water causing widespread damage along the river. Washington coverage outlines five leading candidates Reed, Burrows, Cannon, McKinley, Henderson for the House speakership with Reed leading in votes and Blaine opposing him.

Harry P. Richards aged 17 was employed by J A Davis at 73 High street. He fell down an elevator shaft yesterday afternoon and died en route to City Hospital. He resided at 17 Euclid street.

President Lewis of the Brooklyn horse car roads rejects District Assembly 75 proposal citing $100,000 annual extra expense. A strike on eighteen surface roads is expected to begin early tomorrow.

Luther Tallman a Fairport New York seeds and fertilizers dealer came to Detroit to buy seed. He was robbed of 4500 in cash and 1000 in drafts last night while returning to his hotel from the theatre. Detectives suspect robbers who followed him from Fairport.
Washington Jan 10 The Post reports the Senate tariff committee will offer an amendment raising lumber duty to 150 per thousand feet, a 25 percent cut from the committee’s bill. A compromise from Northwest senators set the rate at 150 with a proviso conditioning it on Canada removing its export duty.

The firm notes the six month expiry of the lasters price list after its financial year drives the move to a free shop. A laster applied for work and was promised employment when ready. Secretary Daly J visited for a conference with the lasters.

Arthur Lord appointed. 6000 eligible workers. 450+ appointed after examination. 1014 pass. 955 employed with 267 veterans. Labor service and cemetery administration noted.
