Worcester reports a skating accident on Lake Quinsigamond where one man, George Gelineau, 22, drowned and three women were rescued. Policemen broke through thin ice while attempting to recover the body, ending the search at dusk. Mrs Mae Hughes and her cottage helper aided survivors using a clothesline. Donald Gonover and his father, Samuel, helped pull victims to safety.
Eight year old Flmer Bates of Union street South Braintree fell through the ice on the Monatiquot River while skating with companions. A unidentified stranger rushed to the scene crawled to the edge of the cracked ice and pulled the boy to safety before vanishing into the crowd.
Emporia Kansas reports a surprise marriage at the Kansas Normal School. Karl Freeman and Julia Freeman, students, were found to be siblings by adoption rather than blood, clearing a path for their union with no impediment.
A 125 foot iron smokestack collapse during a Peabody leather factory fire killed one firefighter and injured six others. The blaze at T. H. O Shea’s nine story plant caused about 350000 in damage and drew aid from Lynn Salem Danvers Beverly and Wakefield. About 125 workers were left jobless as the fire threatened nearby tanneries and a lumber yard before surrounding engines halted spread.

Those acquitted were D. Newton Barney of Farmington Robert W Taft of Providence James Hermingway of D Heaton Robertson and Frederick F Brewster of New Haven and Henry K McHarg of Stamford Conn.
Edward Dickinson aged 43 was discovered slain on the floor of his Spring street room with a heavy chair across his neck. Minnie Dickinson was detained on drunkenness charges as police investigated the death with two visitors being sought. Medical examiner Paine ruled strangulation as the cause.
Ephram Tasher an aged invalid farmer and his wife perished when their home and farm buildings burned four miles from Jackson. Nurse Cora Elwell of Waldo, who cared for them, escaped by leaping from a second story window and was found unconscious in the snow.
W R Tasher and his wife were away at a grange meeting when a fire broke out, likely from an overheated stove. The blaze engulfed the house before inmates could be warned, and help arrived too late. Miss Elwell is under a physician care in a hysterical state.
James L. Bryne, a contracting engineer at 53 State Street and leader in the Red Devil Young Men's Democratic Club of Ward 20, is the principal heir to Mrs. Louise F. Hamilton of Portland Oregon. The will reportedly leaves Bryne between 300000 and 500000 dollars with other nephews and nieces as lesser beneficiaries.

Providence January 9 Judge Elmer Rathbun will not preside over the trial of Mrs Elizabeth Tiffany Mohr and two African American defendants accused of killing her husband. Attorneys say Rathbun told Mohr under oath in divorce proceedings he did not believe her testimony. Judge Charles F Stearns will now oversee the case.
The admiralty announced H. M. S. King Edward VII struck a mine and sank after being abandoned. The crew were rescued with no loss of life and only two injuries. The battleship displaced 16 350 tons, 455 feet long, 78 feet beam, 26 feet draft with four 12 inch guns, four 9 2 inch guns, ten 6 inch guns, four torpedo tubes and a 777 man complement.
London announces the complete evacuation of the Gallipoli peninsula. One British soldier wounded, no French casualties, and all guns saved except 17 worn-out pieces blown up before departure. Generals Birdwood Davies and Admiral de Robeck praised for their roles in the operation.
Attorneys for Mrs. Mohr protested and threatened to bring their objections to the Supreme Court after Judge Rathbun had voiced an opinion on their client's veracity. To avoid delay, it was arranged that Judge Stearns would preside.
