Counsel for Miss Richardson argued there was no evidence of crime amid a sharp, biting critique. The remark came as testimony unfolded in a case described as highly accusatory, though supporters noted a lack of concrete proof.
In a courtroom confrontation Dr Eunice Kinney faced a caustic two hour address by Counsel Bartlett defending Miss Richardson. Bartlett harshly criticized Kinney calling her ignorant careless and sensational while accusing her of spying and delaying actions amid a poisoning case. Kinney sat nearby visibly strained as the heated exchange continued.
Captain Thomas Robertson, famed English sailor, has seized the steamship Heathford over $2500 in alleged back wages. He refuses to surrender control or discuss a settlement, threatening to stay aboard with his wife and three children as owners seek to resolve the dispute in federal courts. Robertson, honored by Dom Pedro, the U S president, and England for bravery at sea, landed in port after delivering Java sugar to Revere Refinery and was told to hand the ship to Julius Muller. He insists payment should be made in the port of departure and will not discuss compromise.
London reports Castro's response as acceptable while discussions between Great Britain and Germany about when to raise the blockade of the Venezuelan coast proceed.
From Berlin the foreign office reports President Castro accepted allied arbitration conditions. Officials see this as a significant advance toward amicable settlement, with preliminary talks in Washington likely to resolve most points before The Hague arbitration court.
Lebanon New Hampshire January 10 The worst fire in local history broke out at 12 30 am rear of W E Mudgett Co grocery in a dense area. Two buildings burned by 2 am with losses estimated between 30000 and 35000 dollars. Fire struck Mudgett and Hildreth buildings and spread through wind driven flames. Losses include Mudgett store 6000 stock 10000 Hildreth building 5000 stock 15000 total insured about 24000 dollars.
Henry Whiting aged ninety nine leaped from a second story window in his Tilton home in night clothes. He lay unconscious in the snow with frostbitten feet and hands and died later. Born in Boston he silversmithed for eight decades and was the oldest member of Franklin Lodge I O O F in the state for fifty years. He joined the Order of Rebekah at ninety one.
The forecast calls for fair conditions in Boston and surrounding areas this weekend. Temperatures remain cold with fresh westerly winds shifting to southerly, creating brisk but dry weather through Saturday and Sunday.
A three alarm blaze in the Equitable building in Boston sent workers, bankers, and clerks fleeing into Milk Street as flames rose from the basement. Elevator crews, led by James Sullivan, James Brennan, and Theodore Stuart, rescued hundreds despite smoke. Miss Jennie Farrington barely escaped death before a fireman saved her from Room 80. Horace G. Wadlin of the Bureau of Labor Statistics was named public librarian by the trustees after James L. Whitney resigned due to ill health. Wadlin will assume the post February 1, with Whitney likely remaining in a minor capacity. Wadlin, a national figure, was surprised by the appointment.
