Portland man dies by own hand at Young's hotel
A man registered as William White of Portland killed himself at Young's hotel by taking laudanum on Tuesday afternoon. Papers found on him identify him as John Hickey of New Bedford, a discharged seaman from the bark Europa. He had been in financial distress and left the city for England after telling his clerk he would return Thursday.

Man Arrested for Horse Theft Sentenced to Auburn Jail
Michael Franklin, who lost a fee in the Grand a yard at Portland, on Monday, died Tuesday. On Monday, John Morang, alias Russell, of Massachusetts, was arrested in Lewiston and taken to Lisbon, charged with stealing the horse of John Allen. He was tried and sentenced to a term in Auburn jail.

Miss Lydia Story Found Dead at Hopkinton
A 62 year old widow living alone was found dead on the 3d, believed to have died while preparing to make a meal. Mrs. Mary E. Hoey of Natick was convicted of maintaining a gambling nuisance, fined 58 dollars plus costs. Wilbur F. Wingate, once a Lawrence provisioning center, now in Norwich hotel work, was arrested in Lawrence for adultery. In Newburyport police court Paul Spinney fined 100 dollars for sale of liquor and maintaining a liquor nuisance. Charles W. Brown fined 50 dollars for similar offenses. Ipswich cases postponed to the Ist inst. J Brown of Westport went to Fall River to settle accounts, disappeared with several hundred dollars, possibly on a drinking spree. Gloucester aldermen named Joseph A. Moore city marshal and George B. McKenny night watch captain. list of patrolmen and special police appointed.
