Army Reduction Debated By Belknap Townsend Sherman

Secretary Belknap and Adjutant General Townsend testified to the House Military Committee, largely confirming General Sherman’s views on army reductions. The 25 infantry, 10 cavalry, and 5 artillery regiments remain in frontier posts and guard duties as Congress debates cuts. Belknap warns further reductions jeopardize the service as recruiting falters, deaths and desertions already shave over 16 000 annually, with 7 000 desertions. He supports finishing sea coast fortifications in key ports though not universally.
