Assault on General Greely Leaves Army Officer in Critical Condition
In Washington on January 7 General A. W. Greely chief signal officer and Arctic explorer lies seriously injured after being assaulted by Joseph C. Furnace a Baltimore messenger with a companion George Murphy. Furnace and Murphy were drinking and wandered to Greelys Washington home where Furnace forced entry and threw Greely down stairs fracturing his head. Murphy fled. Furnace 23 arrested. Physician says Greely expected to recover.
