Wentz Coal Contracts Under Fire In War Dept Inquiry
Chairman Calder questioned Colonel Wentz on commissions tied to coal sales to the War Department during shortages last summer and fall. Wentz said he delivered 70 000 tons at about seven dollars a ton earning 81 000 in commissions while a potential 275 000 ton deal could have yielded 101 000 more, but he declined due to the declining market. Senator Kenyon pressed about a September sale by Watkins Coal Co to the War Dept at 9 1/4 dollars a ton with costs reported at 3 1/4 dollars, asking where the six dollar profit went and if it exceeded a fair margin. Wentz replied the profit was not for him to decide and that his duty was securing market prices, not assessing profits.

Tariff bill urged as remedy for deplorable farm industry
Washington January 6. Senate testimony from F. J. Hagenbarth and George M. Thurmond and W. F. Schilling described agricultural conditions as deplorable and urged the Fordney tariff bill to help. Schilling proposed butter 6-10c per lb and cheese 7-15c per lb. Hagenbarth warned of frozen mutton and lamb stock in England and Australia ready to enter a revived market to pressure American producers. Thurmond warned Southwest conditions were on the brink with a threat of a repeat of 1893.
