Blackballed by St James Club Fifty Votes Against Knapp Pick

Montreal January 6 Consul General Bittenger was blackballed by the St James Club amid reports of his remarks on French Canadian independence. The club, with state governors general among its members, cast about fifty black balls defeating his selection as U S representative. Predecessors Knapp and Anderson were honored members. Chicago article and local papers amplified the remarks blamed for the vote.
