Sailors Lost Off Cape May Amid Ocean Shipping Notes

A sailor named Alexander Greybold aboard the four masted coal schooner Lewis H Goward drowned off Cape May while fleeing toward Baltimore. Reports say steamer Lyeia with Captain Evans arrives at the former Avonmouth route port, damage to deck and loss of cattle and sheep, water in hold No 2, while new steamers and other vessels are noted in port.

Two ships collide off Falmouth. thirteen dead

A collision off Trovose Head sinks the French steamer Duguesclin and endangers the British ship Rossshire. The Rossshire captain and twelve crew members die, while eleven Duguesclin crew members perish. The Norwegian steamer Trom rescued survivors and transferred them to a pilot cutter. A separate voyage of the steamer Admiral Dewey carried United States mail and numerous saloon passengers from Long Wharf to Port Antonio.
