In Washington on January 4 the Senate debated the American note proposing peace talks but failed to vote on the Hitchcock resolution endorsing President Wilson's note. Senator Lewis defended the move and challenged Senator Lodge's criticism as Republicans prepared for further speeches.
Senator Hitchcock failed to secure unanimous consent for a vote late tomorrow after an objection by Senator Brandegee. During the ensuing parliamentary maneuver Senator Works took the floor to deliver a four hour prepared valedictory speech.
Thomas W. Lawson cancelled his Europe trip and will testify before the rules committee Monday morning on the leak charge that Wall Street had advance information about President Wilson's peace note. London Jan 4 The former Cunard liner Ivernia used as a government transport was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on Monday last. Thirty three crew members and 120 military men are reported lost.
The 14 278 ton Ivernia carrying troops to Salonika was sunk by an enemy submarine in rough seas. Initial reports listed four officers and 146 men missing, later updated to 33 crew and 120 troops lost. Built in 1900 at Newcastle, the vessel measured 582 feet by 64 feet and had serviced Canada and Dardanelles routes.
The Ivernia built in 1900 for Cunard served Liverpool to this port for 12 years opposite the Saxonia before withdrawal with its sister vessel. It last sailed regularly in 1913 with final appearance in 1914, measuring 582 feet long and 14 278 tons gross. Commanded at times by Captains Turner and Rostron, it was famed for steadiness in all weathers and role in ocean history.
Vatican letters reported by Dr. A Palmieri indicate Pope Benedict XV will appoint a four cardinals commission to revive Leo XIIIs effort toward Christian unity and friendly ties with the Anglican church. Rome expected to issue a public statement soon.

Miss Mildred Melzian daughter of Louis Melzian of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and James J. Riley claim agent for the Boston Elevated Street Railway are dying after a taxicab shooting on Beacon street near University road. The 6 15 pm attack left Melzian with two abdominal wounds and Riley with head and abdominal wounds. Both victims are hospitalized and not yet speaking to police. Driver Lawrence E McDonald of 99 East Canton Street was involved.
Albert J. Allen received three months at the House of Correction and William A. Thompson four months for violations of the drug laws, sentenced yesterday afternoon by Judge Morton of the Superior Criminal Court.
