Dense smoke filled the Parker House basement causing excitement among 350 guests at 1 45 am. Guests woke and rushed downstairs despite staff assurances that there was no danger. Fire officials reported the blaze contained to the basement with no injuries and no spread beyond.
Guests awoke to dense smoke as a basement fire, likely from crossed wires, burned several stores. Firemen arrived after delay, hoses run through sidewalk lights, and hotel staff tried to reassure guests while evacuations continued. Damage estimated at $1000 with additional smoke losses.
William Angelo 385 of Snow Hill Street North End died after a timber blow to the head in the tunnel under the common. He was taken to City Hospital with a fractured skull and died an hour after admission.
