Fitzgerald confers with Chairman Cole on reopening closed hotels and directs Superintendent Logue to inspect paving yards and stone crushers. An ordinance abolishing the street department and redistributing its functions is drafted, with ex-Alderman Charles Slattery chosen as city treasurer.
Acting Superintendent Charles Logue will tour city yards with Mayor Fitzgerald this morning as part of a wide inspection of streets and water departments. The mayor plans an ordinance abolishing the superintendent of streets office and reorganizing deputies under department heads, with legal details reviewed by Corporation Counsel Babson.

Springfield Mass January 3 Captain Sidney Bowers of Engine 4 was killed and fireman Frank I Hines seriously injured when incendiary fire gutted the Highland Baptist Church. The blaze began in an adjoining barn set twice before in two months. Roof collapse trapped Bowers. only his head was recovered. Church valued around 60000 with about 40000 insurance.

In Brockton on January 3,City Marshal Kingman named Mrs Aruda Lepore Blasi as the brains of an alleged shoplifting gang. About 5000 worth of loot recovered with 3000 identified. others from Taunton Lynn and Boston failed to ID items. Children of the suspects were taken to City Farm as neglected. A woman returning home from work along Dorchester Avenue was robbed after two young men grabbed her green cloth bag containing cash sales and a cash book. A bystander chased one suspect, Richard Goode, who was later detained by police. The victim, about 18, gave a full account at the station.
