United States ambassador Joseph H. Choate met with British Premier Lord Salisbury at the Foreign Office to press the issue of Delagoa Bay flour seizures. Boers in Kimberley show strong interest in the Premier mine using searchlights last night and shell fortifications this morning. Royal Artillery returned fire with shells landing amid enemy smoke. Tug Resolute Sunk in Collision

A collision near Putnam involved the tug Resolute and the Swatara. The Swatara pinned the Resolute and saved fifteen of its crew before rescue efforts found one missing engineer Ottobine. Ottobine, from Yarmouth, with wife and two children in Chelsea, is presumed picked up in Boston.

Borghese steamer foundered off Cape Finisterre

Bristol dispatch says the British steamship Borghese of Glasgow foundered last Friday in a hurricane off Cape Finisterre. Twenty two crew drowned. nine survivors reached Bristol. Owned by W. H. Raeburn of Glasgow, last reported at Malta December 18 from Erganteria. Built in Sunderland in 1870, 1381 tons burthen.

The three masted schooner 8 P Hitchcock from Bath Maine ran ashore at 3 am off Moriches New York eleven days from Brunswick Georgia. The ship rode the surf and life saving crews battled winter seas to rescue all aboard including Captain Colensen using breeches buoy after hours of cold wind and toil.

Anniversary Parade Marks St Peter's Aid Society Day

In Provincetown on January 3 the St Peter's Aid Society marked its twenty fifth anniversary with a parade led by chief marshal Captain J J Souza. Mortgage Papers Burned at West Somerville Church Anniversary

During the twenty fifth anniversary celebration at West Somerville Baptist Church the mortgage papers were burned in the vestry. The event was organized by the Ladies' Benevolent Society work committee with supper from 7 to 8 pm followed by a musical and literary program. Rev. Arthur I. Snell burned the society’s mortgage papers after the program as the debt was paid off by 2000 shares at $1 each bought by over three hundred church members.
