Dartmouth alumni of Manchester hold second annual meeting

The resident alumni of Dartmouth College in Manchester held their second annual meeting on Tuesday evening. Moody Currier was elected president with Ira A. Supreme Court session opens with Langdon case at St Albans

The January session of the supreme court at St Albans opens with a heavy docket led by the Langdon railroad case involving many parties and counsel, including Senator Edmunds. In Burlington the Chittenden county court meets with nine cases, none of great note. Charles White of Burlington, 26, married with two children, disappeared Saturday and was found drowned Tuesday at a dock after falling in when intoxicated as the slip froze. Insurance agent K D Howking, convicted of larceny and facing forgery indictments, has gone violently crazy and will be moved to Brattleboro Insane asylum.

Fitchburg appoints Gilchrest as chief of police

William Gilchrest is appointed and confirmed as chief of police in Fitchburg, with the remainder of the force unchanged from last year. Nearly a dozen local incidents include a 10 year old drowning in Spiker river near Lawrence, a painter injured in Brockton, and city government notes on school committees and salaries.

Three McDonald brothers killed in Belknap jail escape attempt

Report from Graham Texas says the three McDonald brothers, suspects in Martin murder at Belknap, died during a jail breakout. Deputy Davis Melton was wounded, Deputy Murfee killed, and a citizen shot one fugitive as others fled through floor and weeds. Baldwin and Boone were recaptured.

Swindle via Fraudulent Telegraphed Lottery Claim

In Havana a forged Madrid telegram fooled J. M. Borjes & Co. into cashing a ticket claimed as the Madrid lottery prize of 500000 dollars. The firm recovered most funds and arrests followed. the operation’s main actor is in prison. The scam caused wide business excitement but caused no lasting financial disruption to Borjes & Co.

Ashland trio arrested in Gibbons children murder

Advices from Ashland Ky report three white men Wm Neal Ellis Craft and George Ellis arrested on a confession in the Gibbons children murder. They are jailed in Catlettsburg amid expected lynching. Neal and Craft allegedly entered the house and murdered Emma Thomas and two Gibbons children with an axe. Ellis reportedly urged the crime and later confessed.

Snow v Weeks in Rockland Supreme Court Verdict

In Rockland last week George L. Snow sued Leander Weeks for trespass over a false imprisonment after Weeks as Rockland city treasurer issued a warrant and had Snow jailed eleven weeks. Snow, a lime manufacturer active in the Greenback movement, argued unjust tax assessment and political persecution. The court held Weeks had no authority to issue the warrant, awarded Snow damages for time loss and mental suffering, and the jury returned $500 to Snow.

Western Massachusetts Construction Boom Boosts Regional Prosperity

The Springfield Republican reports a building surge across western Massachusetts and nearby Connecticut towns, with over 4.6 million dollars in projects. Carmen Repeated at Boston Theatre by Her Majestys Opera

The Italian opera Carmen was repeated last evening in Boston by Her Majestys Opera with the same cast as last week. A large audience attended and the performance was smooth and excellent. Mile Dotu sung despite a severe cold and was supported by the indulgent audience. Tonight Faust will be performed with Campanini and Novara in principal roles and a full supporting cast.
