President Taft welcomed 8092 guests at the third New Year reception in the White House marking the start of the 1912 official and social season. Army and navy officers and other officials attended alongside the public.
The Taft White House reception drew high fashion and diplomacy as Rear Admiral Porter faulty on the steps, while President Taft greeted about 8092 guests in two hours. Notables included Admiral Peary and James Bryce leading diplomats. Mrs Taft and guests wore elegant gowns and formal dress.
A landslide broke from a cliff on Dorchester Avenue at Dorchester Lower Mills and trapped three workers digging at the foot of the hill. One man, Joseph Sperassi of 76 Charter Street, was injured as the earth and rock slid down. the others escaped.
Sperassi remained conscious for an hour as earth and rock tumbled from a bluff while he directed his own rescue. He warned workers against using the derrick and helped call for jacks from car barns to lift the load and free him after a 25 foot collapse during a cellar dig beside the street.
Derrick operation at Milton car barns trapped a man beneath a tonnage of rock. Officer Thomas Smith urged action while Sperassi resisted. Henry Hargraves arrived with a crew, jacks, ropes and picks. Rescuers freed the man after about an hour and he was taken to hospital with hopes for recovery.
Boston Intercolonials defeated Ottawa in a decisive hockey matchup as part of a busy sports slate. The report also notes international tennis, boxing, and local college contests in a packed sports summary.
Patrolman Frank D. Sullivan captured three men in a Roxbury store late last night after Miss Elizabeth Walsh summoned help by phone. The suspects identified themselves as George W. Best, 18, of 1323 Washington street Walter Campbell alias O'Brien of 72 Waltham street and Joseph A. Phipps, 19, of 1046 Columbus avenue.
Two companions fled with a $40 overcoat after a break in at the Roxbury store. Police found jimmied front door and smashed vestibule window. Officer Sullivan, aided by Miss Walsh, restrained three men as officers closed in. accomplices escaped through rear door and gate.
Taft remains committed to attending the 175th anniversary dinner of the Charitable Irish Society in Savannah on St Patrick's Day despite requests from Boston to change plans. The Boston society unanimously declined to relieve him of his promise, confirming his Savannah engagement.
The Democratic State committee endorsed Eugene N Foss for the Democratic presidential nomination in a unanimous vote at a Quincy House meeting. Chairman John F McDonald planned not to seek another term, prompting Governor Foss to visit Mayor John F Fitzgerald to urge him to persuade McDonald to stay in post. The mayor replied that he would have to attend mass first.
The Governor and Mayor rode to St Mark's Church then to Mr. McDonald's office where the telephone was used to confer. McDonald agreed to take the chairmanship but President Joseph Maynard of the Democratic city committee was also discussed as an alternative.
Quiet ceremony in Brooklyn last Wednesday united Miss Marguerite Daly of Brookline and Louis Curtiss Cummings of Princeton. The bride, 25, was given away by her brother Leo J. Daly. the groom’s mother declined comment. The couple plan residence at 57 Pleasant Street Brookline and will be at home after Feb 1.
Mr and Mrs Frank O Wellington of Braintree receive a New Year surprise when their son Harold who had been reported dead reappears by telephone from New York just as 1912 begins. Harold had disappeared in October while a Columbia University medical student with no known cause for the vanishing.
Frank O. Wellington, dinner chain member of Fore River Shipbuilding, recalls going missing after attending the World Series in Philadelphia. He says he woke aboard a tramp steamer headed to Hamburg and worked his passage back, but his story faced disbelief from ship officers and his family searched in vain. He appeared agitated when questioned, then calmed after reading the clipping.
