A pitiful tale from Westfield Bank shows a defaulter’s plight moving directors to tears. An old father and mother died with words of gratitude for their son on their lips.
The four masted schooner Northland captained by Charles H. Saunders, battered and icebound with deck damage, was towed into port by the revenue cutter Gresham. On board, Mrs. Josephine Saunders of Orland Maine narrowly escaped drowning in her cabin during the weekend storm that left the vessel hopelessly crippled.
Mrs Saunders refused to leave the New England schooner despite Nauset and Orleans life savers offering to ashore her. The Nauset boat swamped twice and sank 100 feet from the beach before the crews joined with Orleans to reach the schooner. The Northland, a 242 foot four mast ship, sailed from Philadelphia with 3000 tons of coal for Searsport Maine. A gale of 60 miles per hour tore sails, flooded the hold with three feet of water, and wrecked the deck as the crew of 43 fought to survive.

Grace Brosser and Charles Edward Twigg were found dead from poison in the parlor of Brosser’s home in Cumberland Maryland just before their wedding. A jealous woman is suspected after learning of the nuptials.
Coroner Beall states death not by self action and finds no poison package in or around the parlor. State Attorney Robb and Deputy Sheriff Clay express doubt as theories shift to poisoned candy given by a woman to Miss Elosser, with no candy found. Twigg and Elosser are prominent locals amid suspicions of jealousy and romance. Elosser, 28, was a divorcee. Twigg, 33, widower previously married.
Constantinople January 1 A strong quake at Brusa in Asia Minor yesterday damaged the cupola of the mausoleum of Sailtan Orkhan Ghazi. No lives were lost, but many houses were partly wrecked.
In Saugus a groom to be and his mother disrupt a wedding attempt as Sadie McGillivray of Maplewood and Harry Albert Saunders, a 22 year old athlete, figure in a romance. The bride rejects the fiancé at the last moment and a new date is set amid reconciliation efforts.
Saturday night the groom to be failed to appear for Thanksgiving Eve vows at Sacred Heart rectory in Maplewood. Miss McGillivray waited alone while Saunders played basketball and later claimed his mother forced an arrest to stop the match. The couple reconciled briefly then parted, with Miss McGillivray declaring the courtship over and advising future fiancés to avoid similar delays.
Three Joy Street patrolmen braved a blazing home at 28 Pitts Street just before 9 pm and rescued five children crushed by a panic caused when a lamp exploded.
A two story wooden house housing many tenants trapped the Miceli family on the top floor. A lamp exploded in the entry between the kitchen and front room, filling the area with flame and smoke. The parents rushed to evacuate with five children, believing the others had followed, and fled into the street.
In Manchester New Hampshire Merrimack Street Baptist Church during morning service a fire broke out alarming crowd yet Pastor N L Colby kept calm. He finished collecting sermon notes then dismissed the congregation to exit safely as smoke rose through the registers.
After parishioners left the church during a calm exit a fire rapidly engulfed the building. Loss is estimated at 25000 with 16000 insured. Several firemen suffered minor injuries when a balcony collapsed but were rescued. Cause believed overheated furnace. The church was among the city’s oldest picturesque Protestant edifices.
The Rev. Herbert Spencer Johnson of Boston bought a 50 by 100 foot lot in Portland's business district for 210000, setting a new front foot record of 4200. He plans to build a modern structure and is visiting his mother Mrs. W. J. Johnson.

The Massachusetts Committee of 100 on reciprocal trade with Canada endorsed Senator Henry Cabot Lodge for re election. The group, led by Governor elect Eugene N Foss former vice president and Henry M Whitney former president, says over 80 percent of members support Lodge. The letter cites Lodge stance on Canadian reciprocity and urges Massachusetts legislators to back his re election.
Sir Thomas Lipton sends best wishes to Miss Rose E Fitzgerald on her coming out and hints at hopes for her future marriage. The Fitzgerald household buzzes with preparations while Mayor and family focus on party decor and reception plans.
Miss Rose and her mother aided a reporter in describing her gown. The observer noted silk ribbons lace and fabrics in a confused, bewildered impression.
Westfield January 1. Velenus W Crowson the bank treasurer admitted stealing about 60000 from the Westfield Savings Bank to support his homesick parents. Trustees heard letters from his deceased parents and urged no prosecution but Bank Commissioner Chapin declined to avert arrest. The case ends with Crowson under arrest.
A bank official recounts Crowson’s confession blaming early 1875 support for impoverished parents as the motive for steadily stealing bank funds. Crowson, earning $600 yearly, funded his parents’ return to England and a cotton waste venture, then falsified books after pledging restraint in 1899.
