Brockton Shoe Factory Strike Amid Wage Cut Controversy
In Brockton on January 1, L M Reynolds shoe factory began a new price run with reductions from 2 to 15 cents for edge trimming 16 to 12 for edgesetting 20 to 15 for level ling and sole fasten ings from 20 to 15 cents. About 70 workers including all departments but stitchers and sole leather men left the plant as Reynolds shut the shop and sent home pickets. The union leaders Hubbard J A Murphy and Thomas C Farrell met with Reynolds but he refused to see them. The plant had previously faced a 10 percent cut on January 3, and the crisis comes as leather prices remain high. Employers hope for a smooth restart and a avoided major strike as workers, led by organized unions, stay cautious. Reynolds, a longtime shoemaker now allied with Ward 1 aldermanic bid, remains active at the bench.
