Washington acted to relieve the coal shortage in New England by ordering five ships with 25 000 tons of coal to sail from Hampton Roads and 1500 carloads rushed by rail. Passenger schedules were set aside and Belgian relief ships diverted to meet the emergency after a conference with Director-General McAdoo.
The cold wave that terrorized New England on Saturday eased last night as temperatures rose. Yet New Year’s entry found the region in zero weather with the thermometer at that mark at midnight, threatening further hardship for the poor and jeopardizing life and property.
