Sailors recall wreck of schooner Independence off Glace Bay
James Porter and seven companions recount days aboard the Independence when she went ashore on rocks five miles from Glace Bay. They lost all aboard, faced exposure, and received clothing and transportation aid from the American consul in Halifax and later Gloucester. The crew, all penniless, were aided by Boston and Gloucester officials. eight men are named, including James Canty and Joseph Phillipps. The vessel, built in Essex in 1901, was 102 net tons and valued at 9000 dollars with cargo, insurance covering only a portion of losses.

United Fruit to add three large steamers on west Indies run
United Fruit Company plans to add three larger steamers to its service between this port and the West Indies. Belfast firm Workman Clark & Co. awarded the contract. Each ship will be about tons gross, primarily for fruit but fitted for other goods with luxurious accommodations.
