Reconnaissance in Force Probes Lee’s Movements in Virginia
Reports from headquarters say a reconnaissance in force went out yesterday and may yield news in days. It appears Lee’s army moved from its last position toward the Rappahannock, destination unknown. Capt Swearinger, wounded and captured at Jackson’s battle, is recovering at a farmhouse four miles behind enemy lines. Lieutenant Eddy, Whitley’s ordnance officer, is a prisoner in Richmond. Washington reports no truth to Stuart’s cavalry crossing the Potomac, noting only minor guerrilla activity near Ball’s Bluff and Harrison’s Island before returning to Loudoun County.
