The Peace Society of New York hosted a banquet at the Hotel Astor with about 800 guests. Senator-elect Elihu Root was honored as toast was given by Joseph H. Choate. Speakers included William H. Taft, Charles E. Hughes, James Bryce, Baron Takahira, and Joaquim Nabuco. Root criticized jingoes among Western states.
President-elect Taft entered to an ovation as ex Justice Alton B. Parker accompanied him. Joseph Choate served as chairman and delivered a speech that drew frequent applause and cheers from the assembled guests.
President elect Taft denounces New York newspapers for misrepresenting his remarks on tariff revision. He emphasizes the urgency of conducting the extra session starting March 15 and warns against delaying the important work.

Gardner T. Hart, proprietor of a Padanaram clambake pavilion, testified in the William C. Howard murder trial that Howard was at the pavilion about 11:25 PM on September 19, 1908, the night of the alleged killing of Ida Howard. The State used the testimony to place Howard near the body site. cross examination did not weaken Hart’s statement.
District Attorney James M. Swift endured a courtroom demonstration by Private Thomas A. Doyle from Fort Rodman who claimed to have taught Howard how to kill via carotid pressure. Hart, a Boston Harvard man, detailed his tense testimony, recounting seeing a woman on the pavilion veranda twice and glancing inside before moving toward the Padanaram bridge.
Dr. David C. Scannell declared at a Boston School Physicians meeting that the Board of Health is politicized in appointing school inspectors and that some inspectors are dishonest. Dr. Durgin replied that he has no political influence in such appointments and would say no more.

Seven year old Eva Van Chase of Brookline won a verdict for injuries from being struck by George Lee's speeding auto in Brookline on November 15 1907. The driver rushed to a physician after a football injury. Eva's father Oscar Chase testified the horn was not sounded.
Herbert W. Allen, cashier of Woodsville National Bank for 12 years, is under arrest facing embezzlement charges after bank books show a $19,500 shortfall. Allen allegedly admitted responsibility to the directors.
National Bank investigators and state bank commissioners uncovered a plan to pass bank paper from securities in private vaults as deposits. Allen, about 40, was arrested for embezzling 4000 dollars, pleaded not guilty, and posted 10 000 dollars bond. Bank declared solvent and able to continue business.
Evangelist William A. Sunday was struck several times by Sherman Potts during a revival crowd of about 8000 at the Sunday Tabernacle. Potts was seized and jailed after the assault, while Sunday suffered bruises and the assailant claimed to act to defend women's virtue.
John Parangian a Turk tried to kill himself in a Station 3 East Cambridge jail cell by slashing his throat with a penknife. He was found by Officer Walsh in a pool of blood after a two week search for the man following his arrest earlier for assault on his housekeeper.
At 8 30 three friends visited Parangian then left after 15 minutes. At 9 Officer Walsh found the Turk unconscious with a penknife beside him. Parangian died at Relief Hospital with neck arteries severed in a bung ling gash.
Boston team arrives in Cincinnati for the series as several players join. Boston Post plans to present silver cups to bowlers with best average and top three-string totals in weekly rolloffs. Schoolboys games feature Exeter and Worcester as favorites this afternoon.

O Beal and Irving A Watson confirm strict prohibitions in Maine and New Hampshire.
