In Pekin on February 2, Chih Siu and Hsu Cheng Yu were publicly beheaded as French German and American troops guarded the street. Officials were escorted by Japanese infantry to the execution ground. Hsu Cheng Yu received opium while Chih Siu faced fate calmly. Other ministers ordered executions will follow in Sianfu.
Pekin dispatch notes heavy fighting between French and Chinese near Chen Ting fu. Chinese envoy Picton proposes ministers from Britain and America appoint representatives to discuss missionary issues and native converts claims. Sir Ernst Satow resists involvement.
Freshman Henry Schurman faced more rough treatment by classmates at the Maryland Institute. Magistrate Justice Nelson P. Poe, who had fined three tormentors for past offences, was jeered when he visited the university. An outbreak occurred in class but Dean Coale quelled it and warned of expulsion for further persecution. Schurman said he might not attend classes soon.

In Springfield on Feb 26, John D. Cassels, 87, a sewing machine salesman, fatally wounded Mary Lane 27, mother of three, after she refused to elope. He then drank carbolic acid and both survived long enough to be cared for as physicians predicted they would not recover. Lane, husband of Mary Lane, was away at the time. The crime occurred at the Bliss house on Bliss road Longmeadow.
In Washington this February the Senate quarrel erupted as Senator Allen of Nebraska launched a tirade against Admiral Sampson calling him a conceited ass and a rank coward. The House debate centered on a dispute over a speech withheld from the Record and handed to General Grosvenor, sparking a party-line adjournment.
Former inspector Cogan accuses R F Clark of corruption and W B Watts of dishonesty and unfitness for police chief. He labels C P Curtis a falsifier and liar, cites a past mob of burglars in Station 1 with stolen goods sold at police HQ and a suicide among the gang, and notes a policeman named Walter Abbott involved.
Cheyenne Wyoming February 26 193? The worst coal mine disaster in state history occurs at Diamondville Mine No 1 of the Diamondville Coal and Coke Company. Thirty five men are believed killed with just one survivor John Anderson severely burned after escaping through the flames. The mine entries were sealed to stop the blaze and rescue attempts ended as hope faded.
Information from Tolland five miles northwest of here states a hermit of unknown name was burned to death in his cabin last night. The man was a German by birth.
