PORTLAND February 26 The Young Men's Democratic Club of Portland held its annual dinner at the Preble House before the city election to rally support. Congressman-elect Fitzgerald of Boston joined Portland figures to discuss the income tax and Democratic fiscal policy, contrasting wealth and labor while criticizing Republican misrule and the era of rising Treasury deficits.

Overdue Schooners Safe and Reported Encounters at Sea

The schooner Fortuna from Boothbay Maine arrived safely at Norfolk on February 26 after sailing February 4 with ice cargo. Captain Norman McLeod said on February 16 she spoke the Georgie L. Dickson off the coast, a vessel that had left Clark's Cove Maine January 30 for this port and was thought to have foundered. The Dickson had previously assisted the crew of the John M. Moore of Philadelphia, which was abandoned at sea. The Moore lost its main and mizzenmasts. the Dickson lost a boat, mainboom, gaff, mainsail and two jibs, plus one sailor. The Georgie L. Dickson is now reported making harbor. Also, the Bath schooner Talofa, from Portland February 6 to Philadelphia, arrived at St. Thomas February 23, after being blown off course. She reported February 22 off the coast at latitude 19 north and longitude west, speaking the ship Roanoke of Bath from Manila, arriving New York November 27. the Talofa was found all right.

Long voyage rescue at sea between ships

Captain F Shepherd of the Leyland line steamship Columbian reports a fine eight and a half day passage from Liverpool. A distressed barkentine Glenora, ninety days out from Buenos Ayres for Hamburg, was sighted in a southeast gale. Glenora’s crew faced bread and beef scarcity. Columbian supplied aid as the Glenora’s mate had been confined to his cabin for five weeks.

Schooner Winnie Laurie Reaches New London in Distress

Winnie Laurie, third logwood carrier in a week, arrives badly strained and crew exhausted after a voyage from Monte Cristo Haiti. Departed Jan 26, endured a ten day trip turned into a monthlong ordeal, torn sails and leaks, subsisting on flour and water. Captain Matthewson, with 42 years in West Indies trade, says nothing like it before. Cargo bound for New York.

Salem Aged Tanner James Braden Dies at 77

James Braden, longtime Salem leather dealer born in Middletown Connecticut, died at his Federal Street home after a long life as a seafarer turned tanner. He moved to Salem in youth and ran his own tanning business for nearly fifty years. A former member of the Second Corps Cadets, he was active in public affairs though never elected to office.

Gem rink fire destroys large Lumber Street structure

In Bridgeport on Lumber street the Gem rink burned down after a carnival of Company K closed and a White Lily Circle masquerade ball drew a crowd. Fire started in a bunting‑trimmed booth as people rushed outside. no serious injuries were reported. Loss reached about 4000 dollars.

The interior featured fresh plants and flowers with three days of preparation. Blair is the grandson of the early Capitol newspaper man Blair and son of Montgomery Blair once Postmaster General in Lincoln's cabinet.
