Allen Gives Figures On Reduced Penalties

Attorney General Allen presented statistics to a legislative committee claiming that in Middlesex county 501 appealed cases reduced penalties from 73 years and 14,076 dollars in fines to seven months in prison and 9,375 dollars in fines in the Superior Court. In Suffolk county, 214 appealed cases cut sentences from 64 years and 2,710 dollars in fines to six months and 410 dollars in fines. He argued these figures show the system benefits appeals and called for changes empowering courts and limiting non pressing by district attorneys. He defended lower court judges while noting one potentially unfit judge, and urged broader judge powers and court approval for nol pros actions.
